Week 4: UNT Media Visits

For Monday’s (9/17) class we will be MEETING OUTSIDE Room #107 in the General Academic Building (GAB) at 1 pm SHARP, since we will be touring the local UNT media outlets. We hope this gives you some ideas for hands-on experience and further research over the course of the semester.  Here is a little bit about the media outlets we’ll be touring:

Denton Community Television (DCTV) {}

The Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism operates the city of Denton’s public access channel, Denton Community Television (DCTV). The station provides a media outlet for information and diverse points of view from the citizens of Denton on Charter Cable Channel 25 and Verizon FIOS Channel 39.

Journalism students from both the News and Strategic Communications departments produce programming including a local newscast, sports talk show, public service announcements and other information.

Mayborn broadcast news students also provide reports for newscasts on the city’s government access channel, Denton TV, which air during CNN Headline News three evenings a week.

SWOOP Agency {Follow @SwoopAgency on Twitter}

Opened in fall 2011, the agency creates on-campus opportunities for students to gain experience working on projects for actual clients.Students who major in advertising and public relations can earn practicum credit by working at the agency, and students of other majors can work as volunteers. SWOOP, which is part of UNT’s Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism,provides services in the areas of branding, graphic design, social media, and advertising and public relations.

SWOOP was created by Sheri Broyles, interim chair of the  Mayborn School’s  Department of Strategic Communications, and Bill Ford, a lecturer in the department. The two wanted to create an on-campus opportunity for students to gain experience working on projects related to what they are learning in class.

NT Daily {}

We are the North Texas Daily: the student newspaper for the University of North Texas. Our nonprofit newspaper informs, entertains and offers editorial comment for the UNT community.

During the fall and spring semesters, we publish Tuesday through Friday. During the summer semester, we publish a magazine, On The Record, three times. We do not publish the NT Daily during university holidays or during exam periods.

The North Texas Daily’s mission is to create a professional business atmosphere wherein students can experience and learn the ethics, challenges, and professionalism of the business community along with the ideas, tools and solutions needed to meet the challenges they will encounter in future careers.

We accomplish this by providing training and consultation during the course of the student’s tenure while working at the NT Daily, as well as encouraging them to make their own decisions and solve the everyday business, personnel, customer service and production problems they incur and take responsibility for such decisions.
