Week 7: CANstruction

CANstruction is happening on Friday, October 19th at UNT (this will be our class that day)! As mentioned by Adrienne, our class will be competing to WIN. Let’s go big #ugstJOUR and show the other UGST 1000 classes our sweet collection and creative skills.  It does not take hundreds of cans of food to build a good sculpture – creativity is important too. Think about what part of the team you want to be on and we’ll talk about it in class on Wednesday (10/10/12):

 

Here are the roles for our #ugstJOUR class – you must select ONE (1) area to work in:

  • Collection & Fundraising– responsible for fundraising for can goods and the collecting of can goods. The fundraising/collection department will plan the process of gaining funds for the cans and collecting them through donations or purchase with the assistant of fundraising. TEAM: Nicole, Isabel, Melody, Isaac & Anna
  • Creative & Design – responsible for creating a design for the structure of the cans. This department will need to immediately begin brainstorming for the design. Please be mindful that the design structure would determine by the amount of cans. TEAM: Liz, Jenna, Shelby, Camara, Amber & Celeste
  • Building – responsible for building the structure. The building department will need to be available before CANstruction. TEAM: Lauren, Jeff, Savannah, Jake & Cal
  • Take Down & Load the Food – responsible for taking down the structure down and loading the food onto the truck. The takedown department will need to be available after the CANstruction at 12 noon. TEAM: Andrew, Cheyenne, Astara, Ivan, Theresa, Rachael & Lindsey 

Here are MORE details about the UGST 1000 CANstruction event on October 19th:

  1.  Please come to the Union – first floor and check in on Friday 10/19.    We will have a check-in table outside of Einsteins and some carts to use to bring in your food.  The  easiest way to bring the food is to pull out in front of the Union and bring a cart out to wheel it in.
  2. You have 2 hours to build your sculpture and building can occur any time between 9am-12pm.  If you don’t need the full 2 hours to build you can come any time during that time frame to build.
  3. Please bring any decorations or props for your sculpture.  Decorations/scissors/tape is not provided.
  4. Sculptures will be judged 50% on size of the sculpture (we will give you a form when you check in to count your food items) and 50% on creativity.  The theme for the sculptures is UNT Pride and we have attached some sculptures from previous years.  We anticipate lots of eagles, Green and UNT.. but the sky is the limit.
  5. The only rules for decorating – do not paint the cans/take off label
  6. You will have a space in the first floor of the Union that is a tarp that is 6’x8’.
  7. Judging of the sculptures will begin at 12pm and the winners will be announced immediately following.
  8. If you have some students who can help us load the food at 12:45/1pm – we would welcome help…. All food will be donated to the Denton Community Food Center.  We will have a truck at the Union to load and expect to be cleaned up from the Union in a short period of time when the building is done.

UPDATE:

Amy Simon (coordinator for CANstruction) will be in the Union around 8:00 am to set things up.  Should you need that time to drop your perishable items, you can show up that early to build, drop off your cans, etc. if you want. Check-in is at 9:00 am and you can start building once you check-in (you don’t have to wait until 10:00). Pre-wrapping of cans is allowed if you’d like to show up with your cans already prepared for your sculpture.

Also, don’t forget that judging is based on 50% creativity and 50% # of cans your sculpture contains. Judging will begin promptly at noon and we will be awarding 1st, 2nd and 3rd place sculptures around 12:45.

 

OTHER THINGS TO DO:

ATTEND: Have you signed up for a Learning Center Workshop? Check out the Learning 101 Seriesthe Study Skills Lab or other helpful support programs offered. This assignment is DUE by October 22/12 and you must write a 350 word WP blog post about your experience at the Learning Center workshop, what you learned, and how you will apply that to your own course work/study habits this semester.

PROJECT: Roadtrip Nation Project Proposals are DUE on Monday, October 15, 2012 IN CLASS. Be sure you are talking with your group, contacting your professionals, and setting up your interview! Use your resources and things you are learning this week to organize your proposal. Remember the  RTN interview request and set up HINTS from the previous post.

MIDTERM: Your UGST 1000 Midterm has been moved to Friday, October 26, 2012 from 1-1:50 pm. This will take place in the Sage Hall {Room number to be determined} computer labs on the 3rd floor. Make sure you are reading from the College Success textbook as you are responsible for materials covered both in-class and from the textbook.
